Elon Musk Launches XChat to Challenge WhatsApp and Signal in the Encrypted Messaging Market

Elon Musk's X platform announced it will release XChat, a standalone encrypted messaging app, on April 17, 2026 for iOS. The app positions itself as a direct competitor to WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram with end-to-end encryption, no ads, and no phone number requirement.

What XChat Offers

Key features include end-to-end encryption, no ads or user tracking, X account login only (no phone number), 481-person group chats, voice and video calls, self-destructing messages, screenshot blocking, Grok AI integration, and file sharing. Built in Rust, requiring iOS 16+, sized at 175.8 MB.

What is a Super App?

A super app combines messaging, payments, shopping, and services into one platform. China's WeChat is the best example, where users message, pay bills, order taxis, and handle government services. Musk wants X to become the Western WeChat.

Privacy Claims Under Scrutiny

Musk described XChat's security as "Bitcoin-style encryption," which security researchers call misleading. Apple's App Store privacy card reveals the app collects location data, contacts, and search history, contradicting "zero tracking" claims. Musk told Joe Rogan the goal is "the least insecure messaging system, not the most secure."
