France and UK to Host Conference on Multinational Mission to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

President Emmanuel Macron announced France and the UK will host a conference to organize a "peaceful, multinational mission" to restore free passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Why a Multinational Force Is Needed

The strait is only 34 km wide at its narrowest. Before the war, 25 percent of global seaborne oil and 20 percent of LNG passed through it. Iran closed it on March 2. At least 20 vessels were attacked.

What is the Strait of Hormuz?

The Strait of Hormuz separates Iran from Oman, connecting the Persian Gulf to open ocean. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, and Bahrain depend on it for oil and gas exports. Its closure caused oil prices to surge 55 percent.

France deployed carrier Charles De Gaulle, eight frigates, and two amphibious ships. UK preparing to lead mine clearance. The Kurdistan Region endured 614 strikes during the war, making reopening critical for regional stability.
